Daddy Long-Legs is a 1912 epistolary novel by the American writer Jean Webster.It tells us a story of an orphan Jerusha "Judy" Abbott writing letters to her benefactor,a very rich man who she had never seen.
Jean Webster (pseudonym for Alice Jane Chandler Webster,July 24,1876 – June 11,1916) was an American writer and author of many books including Daddy-Long-Legs.Jean Webster supported women's suffrage and education for women.She participated in marches in support of votes for women,and having benefited from her education at Vassar,she remained actively involved with the college.Her novels also promoted the idea of education for women,and her major characters explicitly supported women's suffrage.
Judy was brought up in John Grier Home,an orphanage.One day,she was told that she would be sent to a college and the fee would be paid by one of the rich benefactors.In return,she had to write to her benefactor to show her progress.In Judy’s mind,the benefactor was an old wealthy man with long legs,so,she wrote the letters calling him “Daddy Long Legs”.Judy was told that she would have no letter reply or a face-to-face meet.She wrote to “Daddy Long Legs” frequently.Day by day,she grew up and fell in love with her roommate’s little uncle,Mr.Pendleton,she also told “Daddy Long Legs” about this.But when Mr.Pendleton made a proposal to her,she refused.In the end,the identity of the mysterious “Daddy Long Legs” was revealed to both Judy and all the readers.He was exactly Mr.Pendleton.All in all,this story had a happy ending.
The book Daddy Long Legs told us a story not only about a girl’s college life,but also the progression how a naive girl became a mature woman.In the book,we can learn many things from Judy,such as her independence,her courage,her enthusiasm of study,etc.
At the beginning,we can see an orphan girl who had never seen the true world,all she knew was the orphan life and caring of little orphans.Then,she got the chance to go to college and everything seemed changed.In the book,we can find how important it is for women to be educated,for education can change a person’s life.The key for women to have a better life is to depend on their own hands.Once a woman became independent,she will hold and control her own life and thus she can get the true happiness.
In conclusion,it is a book worth reading,especially for the girls.
